Barry Sampson Teaching + Practice documents the ideas and work of notable Canadian architect and respected teacher Barry Sampson, Professor of Architecture at the University of Toronto for nearly thirty years. Sampson also was an instrumental part of the evolution of Baird Sampson Neuert, a significant critical practice in Toronto that influenced the development of ideas in the city, throughout the region, and more widely. The publication collects reflections on Sampson’s diverse roles in architecture – teacher, practitioner, advocate, environmentalist, mentor, client, and builder – from selected collaborators, including notable architects, structural and environmental engineers, and academic colleagues.

Sampson’s work shaped Toronto, and southern Ontario — particularly his drive to incorporate leading-edge ecological thinking into his work. This book is a record of Sampson’s contributions to Toronto, but also a record of Toronto’s evolution through buildings and ideas: it tells the story of cultural, aesthetic, and technological change; of shifting social norms; of Toronto’s architectural life from the middle of the 20th century to the 21st, written in competitions, design and construction.
