About the Tour

Explore Gerrard Street East! Discover how a former industrial brickyard is now a hub for Toronto’s South Asian community. Learn how one of Toronto’s first Bollywood movie theatres transformed this East End neighbourhood to an international destination for South Asian culture during the 1970s and 80s.

This tour will be led by Emerging Historian Sarah Takhar. She holds an undergraduate degree in Archaeology from the University of Edinburgh and a master’s degree in Museum and Gallery Studies from the University of St Andrews. Sarah is an experienced international researcher and museum educator who has previously worked with organisations such as the Museum on the Mound, the Scottish Maritime Museum, and the Aurora Historical Society. Sarah is passionate about investigating heritage through a transnational lens, and exploring the cross-cultural connections of history.

For an additional $2 tour participants will be able to select one sweet or taste samples from a mix of popular Indian sweets from a staple Gerrard India Bazaar restaurant, Moti Mahal. Samples include gluab jamun, barfi (varied flavours), kalakand, and jalebi. All sweets are vegetarian, but please be aware sweets may contain dairy, nuts and trace amounts of wheat.
