The recognized voice for heritage in Toronto.
On April 4, 1949, the Toronto Civic Historical Committee (the first of its kind in Canada) was established by Toronto City Council. Its role was to supervise and control all matters of a historical nature with a view to proper preservation and display of all historic sites, buildings, monuments, objects and documents within the City of Toronto. Toronto City Council formally established the Toronto Historical Board on July 1, 1960 as an arm's length agency of the City. It became a registered charity in 1967.
On January 1, 2000, after amalgamation of the former municipalities of Metro Toronto, the functions and composition of the Toronto Historical Board changed, as did its name, to Heritage Toronto.
