Jean Augustine is known as a trailblazing politician, social activist, and educator. In 1993, she made history as the first African-Canadian woman to be elected to Canada’s House of Commons. Jean was solely responsible for championing legislation to recognize February as Black History Month in Canada with a unanimous vote in 1995. She is the recipient of several awards and honours including the Member of the Order of Canada (CM), the Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE), and seven honourary doctorates from various universities. Now almost three decades later, her story continues to inspire young women in Canada and around the world.
The documentary also includes interviews of people who have known Jean personally such as the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau; former Prime Minister of Grenada, Dr. Keith Mitchell; first black Miss World, Jennifer Hosten; British actor, Joseph Marcell; and several Members of Parliament and political leaders in Canada. Through enactments, the film depicts the courage and determination with which Jean fought for the rights of women and African-Canadians.
