My Name Is Jackie is an endearing tribute to Toronto R&B pioneer Jackie Shane! Celebrating her inimitable life, music and impact on the Black and trans community, Director Nicky Lawrence seeks to find joy within the community impacted by Jackie. By partnering with Ravyn Wngz who converses alongside those who the issue effects most, this intimate look into the lives of remarkable change-makers is a beautiful toast to the one and only Ms. Jackie Shane.
My Name is Jackie was unique in its inception because it allowed people from the trans community to have their voices heard through the joyous celebration of her remarkable life. Not only did it engage via Jackie’s musical acumen, it included those who she inspired the most, in particular Ravyn Wngz whose story within the trans community as an activist and artist is well known. Having Ravyn interview other trans artist and activists was a way to change the Publix perception and open their minds. The past all at once converged with the future when they appeared on screen.
