The 15 nominees for the 2024 Book Award, highlight the breadth and depth of Toronto’s heritage, covering topics from music history, to public infrastructure, to immigration and multiculturalism.

The book jury assesses nominees based on the following criteria:

Relationship to Toronto: Does the book’s themes, settings, and/or subject matter relate significantly to Toronto’s archaeological, built, cultural, or natural heritage?

Scholarship: Does the book contribute to of historical knowledge about Toronto? This may be demonstrate either through original academic research and reliance on a diversity of sources or by the strength of a book’s premise, plot, character and setting (such as in first-person nonfiction narratives), particularly from unique and overlooked points of view.

Education: Does the book engage the general public and provide a framework for understanding history and/or issues around heritage in Toronto?

Production Value: Does the book exhibit high quality in design, editing, illustration, and layout that effectively contributes to achieving excellence in advocacy, scholarship, and education?
