North York Recipes for Healing: Leftover Ingredients

Date

May 6 @ 6:00 pm 8:00 pm

About the Event

Join us for a presentation and workshop in celebration of the Asian Heritage Month at the North York Central Library.

In traditional Chinese culture, fish (鱼, Yu) is a dish typically eaten during the Lunar New Year celebrations. It is a homophone of surplus, leftovers (余, Yu), and symbolizes the wish for a year of abundance. In a modern context where sustainability has become essential, the concept of the leftover needs a new interpretation.

Led by Emerging Historian Jingshu Yao, the workshop will begin with a presentation on our recent North York Recipes for Healing project, followed by a conversation with featured artist Zhu Dandan, who provided illustrations for the project. Then participants will use waste and surplus materials to create a collage that represents their story about leftover food. Materials will range from old newspapers, magazines, and gift wrappers to fabrics, plastics, dried leaves and flowers.

Don’t miss this opportunity to delve into the rich culinary heritage of Chinese culture and discover new ways to use storytelling to nourish your body and soul.

The presentation and collage workshop will take place in Room 101.
