About the Event
Join Heritage Toronto and the Friends of Hanlan’s on the August long weekend to commemorate the anniversary of the first public event to celebrate Pride in Canada with a plaque unveiling and on-site activities at Hanlan’s Point!
Bring your own lunch and discover the legacy of queer advocacy and activism on the Toronto Islands and beyond. Engage with the community with historical interpretation and activations throughout the day!
Join us at 11:00am for a special unveiling of a new Heritage Toronto plaque about the history of queer space at Hanlan’s Point and the first pride picnic held there.
Activities and other events celebrating the history of the site will follow, including a drag performance at 1:30pm by the one and only Pam! Pam is a vibrant drag queen based in Toronto, known for her electrifying performances and dazzling costumes. With a flair for theatricality and a magnetic stage presence, Pam captivates audiences, celebrating diversity and self-expression through her art.

Further Information
This event takes place near the Mermaid Cafe on Hanlan’s Point on the Toronto Islands. Please check Island Ferry schedules in advance and be prepared for significant wait times during the long weekend. The latest ferry to get you to the island on time for the 11:00am plaque unveiling departs at 10:15am. Look for Heritage Toronto volunteers at the Hanlan’s Ferry dock, who will point you in the direction of the event.
This event runs rain or shine! Please dress prepared for the weather and consider bringing sunscreen and water to make the day as enjoyable as possible.
