Coordinator, Plaques and Markers Program

Heritage Toronto is a charitable agency of the City of Toronto that works with citizens to advocate for, preserve, and promote a greater appreciation for our city's rich heritage. Through partnerships with local community groups, corporations and volunteers, Heritage Toronto provides city-wide programs and services, including a commemorative Plaques and Markers Program and free neighbourhood walking tours.

Workplace: Heritage Toronto offices, 3rd floor, St. Lawrence Hall, 157 King Street East
Term: 1 year, full-time contract, starting immediately
Reports to: Chief Historian and Associate Director
Salary: Related to experience

Responsibilities:
• Manage all aspects of time-sensitive plaque projects from application to successful completion.
• Conduct historical research in the offices of Heritage Toronto, the City of Toronto Archives, the Toronto Reference Library, and other local research facilities.
• Assign and manage volunteers to assist with research and writing.
• Draft initial commemorative texts to ensure an interpretation of subject matter that is accurate, authentic to place, and engaging for the general public.
• Consult with Chief Historian on plaque content and progress on a regular basis.
• Coordinate, provide support to, and consult with Heritage Toronto's Plaques and Markers Committee in its governance of the Plaques and Markers Program and review of plaque projects and texts.
• Coordinate consultation on plaque texts with external stakeholders.
• Coordinate the design, fabrication, and installation of plaques.

Experience and Skills:
• M.A. in History or a related discipline, either completed or in final stages.
• Excellent research skills, with great attention to detail.
• Highly developed writing skills. Must have ability to condense complicated histories into short, engaging texts.
• Excellent interpersonal skills. Must have ability to constructively and proactively work with staff, Heritage Toronto Board members, Plaques and Markers Committee members, community stakeholders, and project partners.
• Excellent project management skills.
• Strong leadership skills and ability to work on own initiative in fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
• Proficiency in utilizing a variety of software packages, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Project). Ability to work in Adobe Illustrator would be considered an asset.
• Knowledge of the Ontario Heritage Act and best practices for built heritage conservation would be considered a valuable asset.
