Spadina Museum: Historic House & Gardens is currently undergoing an extensive restoration that will highlight the 1920s. On Sunday, February 21, 2010 the City of Toronto and Spadina Museum invite you to immerse yourself in the world of early 20th century design with Inside Interiors, a special event offering guests a taste of the fascinating décor trends of the 1920s and a special glimpse of the restoration currently underway. Participants will experience the historic mansion in a completely unique way, as historian Neil Brochu brings to life the passions and artistic sensibilities that defined the prestigious Austin family.
The afternoon will include an introductory presentation and discussion inside the magnificent drawing room of Spadina Museum, after which historian Neil Brochu will lead guests through the mansion, sharing his wealth of research and understanding of the décor of the early 20th century. As a special treat for participants, Brochu will also reveal artifacts related to Spadina Museum’s restoration that have not yet been unveiled to the public. The event is also a great chance for guests to discover how architecture informed social interactions of the time period and learn more about the relationship between stylistic influences and the decor decisions made by the Austin Family. Brochu will also take time to discuss the impact of certain legendary Toronto design influencers, like the well-known Thornton-Smith Decorating Co., a retailer that helped to single-handedly define Toronto interiors for nearly a century.
This event is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in design, history, culture or architecture. Brochu will examine and elaborate on multiple artistic movements during the tour, including Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, The Aesthetic Movement and Colonial Revival. Take this chance to explore 1920s design and how it continues to impact our lives today!
