Your City, Your House, Your Family
University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies Course

Description:
A guide to Toronto local history research. Are you interested in discovering the history of your house or neighbourhood, the history of your family once in Toronto, or a Toronto business or institution? Are you exploring another aspect of Toronto history? Or are you a writer or researcher? This course introduces established principles of local and family history research as taught worldwide, and suggests how to apply them in the Toronto context. We work our way through a variety of research projects, representative of the expressed interests of participants. In support of these practical case studies we review, in an integrated way, remarkable resources which we can draw upon, including some little-known ones. Watch yourself start to become a local history sleuth!

Historian Christopher Andreae presents the remarkable story of how the nineteenth century railway age allowed Toronto to increasingly dominate Ontario and transform itself into Canada’s industrial powerhouse. Covering the development of the city from 1850 to 1900, he captures the spirit of Toronto’s rise from colonial outpost to metropolis.

Dr. Andreae is Senior Built Heritage Specialist for Golder Associates Ltd. He is the author of the award-winning Lines of Country: An Atlas of Railway and Waterway History in Canada and a contributor to the popular new book Toronto, An Illustrated History of Its First 12,000 Years.

This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the ancient art of marbling. Traditionally a decorative art used in book binding, the technique of moving brilliant colour into simple and complex designs on fabric is a modern translation of this ancient skill. Participants will learn the whole process of marbling beginning with building a marbling tray and mixing the water bath. They will practice basic colour theory and simple marbling techniques on cotton samples. And, before the day is done, they will create four unique and vibrant silk scarves to take home!
This workshop will take place in the costume department and is headed by the BCPV Costume Designer. All paints, cotton samples, silk scarves, and use of marbling tools are included in the registration fee.
Fee: $100 (includes taxes and parking fees)
Members Fee: $90

On June 13, 2010, Toronto Island Grannies in Spirit will host a tour of distinctive homes and community buildings on Toronto Island, each with its own story to tell. The tour will feature a selection of historic, renovated, original and new homes. Ticket holders will have the opportunity to meet Island residents and view historic photographs and memorabilia. Tickets: www.torontoislandhousetour.eventbrite.com or call 416-203-0942

The Toronto Island community started as a “tent city” in the early 1900s. It is now a unique, year-round — and car-free — neighbourhood, with more than 650 residents living in 262 homes. There are no stores, banks, or ATMs. Some of the houses were purchased out of the Simpson’s catalogue in the 1930s. Others were floated from Hanlan’s Point when the Island Airport was built. And still others have been renovated or designed by architects to make optimal use of small spaces. The community is part of the urban landscape, yet magically removed from the city by a fifteen minute ferry ride.

Following the ceremony, please join us for a reception at Alliance Francaise De Toronto at 24 Spadina Road (Spadina Road, north of Bloor Street near Lowther Avenue).

Unveiling Ceremony

Memorial Wall Plaques Dedicated to Patient Labourers Past

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the oldest part of the patient-built boundary wall, constructed in 1860, which stands on the south side of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) at 1001 Queen Street West. These patient-built walls, along with the 1888-89 walls on the east and west sides, are a testament to the abilities of people whose unpaid labour was central to the operation of asylums in the Province of Ontario during the 19th & 20th centuries.

Join us as we unveil a series of nine memorial plaques in remembrance.
Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 1:00 p.m.
Corner of Queen Street West and Shaw Street.

A tour of the wall and all nine plaques will follow the dedication ceremony.

Sponsored by Psychiatric Survivor Archives, Toronto (PSAT), CAMH,
and the generous support of many community donors.
