Restored glass, an illuminated Ark, shapenote anthems and the spoken word are some of the 2009 highlights of Sharon Temple's most anticipated event of the season. Following the practice of the Children of Peace, the Sharon Temple Museum Society recreates The Illumination on the first Friday night of September every year. The Illumination is followed by refreshments, including the traditional "Feast Cake." This year's program features Canadian philanthropist Alan Broadbent as our guest speaker. The musical component is being directed by Toronto-based music leader and teacher of voice, Alan Gasser. Shapenote singing performed by a choir especially assembled for the event combined with the mystical light of candles in each of the Temple's forty windows and twelve corner lanterns, promises a magical evening of candlelit splendour. Tickets for the Illumination (beginning at 8:00 pm) are $25 and may be ordered after August 1st, by calling 905.478.2389. Enjoy a barbeque dinner before the Illumination!

This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the ancient art of marbling. Traditionally a decorative art used in book binding, the technique of moving brilliant colour into simple and complex designs on fabric is a modern translation of this ancient skill. Participants will learn the whole process of marbling beginning with building a marbling tray and mixing the water bath. They will practice basic colour theory and simple marbling techniques on cotton samples. And, before the day is done, they will create four unique and vibrant silk scarves to take home!

Spend the day in one of our historic homes with a costumed instructor and learn how to spin! Mixing history with practical techniques, this workshop will teach participants all the basic skills in the process that turns wool into yarn. Begin by carding wool and then learn about different natural dyes. Next, spin the wool into yarn on both the drop spindle and on an antique treadle spinning wheel. End the day by taking home all the yarn you have spun!

On June 13, 2010, Toronto Island Grannies in Spirit will host a tour of distinctive homes and community buildings on Toronto Island, each with its own story to tell. The tour will feature a selection of historic, renovated, original and new homes. Ticket holders will have the opportunity to meet Island residents and view historic photographs and memorabilia. Tickets: www.torontoislandhousetour.eventbrite.com or call 416-203-0942 The Toronto Island community started as a “tent city” in the early 1900s. It is now a unique, year-round — and car-free — neighbourhood, with more than 650 residents living in 262 homes. There are no stores, banks, or ATMs. Some of the houses were purchased out of the Simpson’s catalogue in the 1930s. Others were floated from Hanlan’s Point when the Island Airport was built. And still others have been renovated or designed by architects to make optimal use of small spaces. The community is part of the urban landscape, yet magically removed from the city by a fifteen minute ferry ride.
